Huéscar



The village is located at 953 meters above sea level and has 7.772 inhabitants (2014). Although founded by the Arabs as a major military enclave, initially their lands were occupied by Roman Villas. Huescar walled city was made on the border between the Kingdom of Granada and Castilla. It belonged to the Duke of Alba, which until 1953 was part of the Diocese of Toledo. He has left a the great collegiate,Santa Maria, numerous churches and convents. The village is perfectly integrated with nature and its surroundings of beautiful landscapes. It is situated close to the mountains and La Sagra is the highest point in the region. It is also close to the natural parks Cazorla, Segura, Castril and Sierra de Maria. Formerly this region was a lake and today it presents a contrasts between deserts, rivers and streams.

Festivities in Huéscar


  • On the 17th of January San Anton is celebrated. In the night of the 16th on the 17th the families gather and taste the Remojón of San Antón, Cuervo (sort of sangria), Picoso Wine. This going together with camp fires. It ends on the 17th with a Mass and procession in the afternoon;
  • At the end of February Carnaval is celebrated;
  • With Eastern several procession are held in the Semana de Santas;
  • The day of the crosses is celebrated on the 3rd of May.
  • Romería de Las Santas: Pilgrimage held on the Monday, exactly fifty days after Easter Monday. The Santas have his hermitage at the foot of the Sierra de La Sagra. Before the pilgrimage, they celebrate the festival with a procession. 
  • "Fiesta del veraneante". It is celebrated in mid-August, with various activities: regional dances, contests bands, movies, theater, exhibitions, etc.
  • October Fair (around the 22nd). With the typical fairground rides, performances, festivals, bars, and large bullfights.
