The Lakes in the Region Vega de Granada



In the regio you can visit three lovely lakes. Two are located near PN Sierra Nevada; Embalse de Quéntar and Embalse de Canales. The other lake where also recreational activities are allowed is located 10 km north of Granada city; Embalse de Cubillas. In the National Park Sierra Nevada you can also encounter several small lakes, especially in spring after the defrost period. In the Natural Park section you find a hiking trail to the Seven Lakes in the Sierra Nevada.


This lake is close situated to Granada city. On this lake are recreational activities allowed. It is located 10 km north of Granada city. By passing the dam you will encounter a picnic area in the woods at the right side of the road. In this area is also a restaurant/bar situated with views on the lake. Embalse de Canales is a reservoir that is located in the foothills of Sierra Nevada, in the town Güejar Sierra. The dam was inaugurated in 1988. The Quéntar Dam was inaugurated on May 11, 1976. It is settled in the hill Bermejales (where you enter the swamp), and the hill of Castillejo. Its wall has a height of just over 100 meters and it has a capacity of 13 and a half million cubic meters. The immediate purpose of the reservoir is to supply water to the city of Granada and to the Vega for irrigation.
