The Lakes of the Altiplano de Granada



In the region of the Altiplano are three beautiful lakes located; Embalse de San Clemente, Embalse de Portillo and Embalse de Negratin. Embalse de San Clemente is situated at the foot of the Sierra La Sagra and Embalse de Portillo is located inside the Natural Park Sierra de Castril. Embalse de Negratin is the biggest lake of the tree and has even a textil and nudist beach at the side of Cuevas del Campo. Close to the damm you have the possibilty to rent water bikes and canoes.


This small lake (622 ha big) is situated close to Huescar. It is surrounded by mountains like Sierra Seca and Sierra La Sagra. Actually there is no recreational area, but what let you to use the natural beach? Coming from Huescar and crossing the dam you can take a dirt road that is going all the way around the lake. Embalse del Portillo is situated in the Natural Park Sierra de Castril. This lake has a surface of 143 and is used for producing electricity. Next to fishing you can take a tour by cano. The renting although is not on the place itself but organized by several outdoor activity companies. A road that is entering the Natural Park Sierra de Castril is going along the lake but you can also take a stop on the dam.

Embalse de Negratin has a surface of 2170 ha and is the third biggest lake of Andalucia. Close to Freila is a beach where you can rent water cycles. At the other side close to the damm you can rent canoes. By taking the road from the dam to Cuevas del Campo you will see after 1 km a sign at the right which leads you to a very nice view point. At the northern side close to Cuevas del Campo are more beaches located. This is also the place.......
