The Natural Parks & Natural Areas of the Altiplano



In the regio of the Altiplano you will find two Natural Parks; Sierra de Castril and Sierra de Baza and several natural areas like Nature Area Sierra La Sagra, Natural Area de La Losa with its very big sequias and Natural Monument Peña de Castril. The area of the Northern Altiplano is also rich for its natural caves. There are two caves located in Natural Park Sierra de Castril. Also at the foot of Sierra Seca and Sierra La Sagra are several caves located, which are difficult to find because there are no road signs. We have located them on the map. Parque Natural Sierra de Castril is a natural park situated at the north of Castril. It has a superfice of 12.696 ha and mountain peaks over 2000 meter. The Castril river is the heart of the park and is also the cause of the area´s unusal appearance. The water of the river comes at the surface in the park and runs al the way down to lake Portillo. In the park you find a lot of marked walking trails for example to the natural spring of the Castril river....

Natural Park Sierra de Baza is a very green park, rich of Scot and Austrian pines and flora. It has a higher rainfall than the other parks and the mountain range is up to 2300 meters. The park is 56.649 ha big. The park has nice valleys like Bordurria, deep canyons like Plaza, Mediterranean meadows like Los Prados del Rey. Stunning views you have from viewpoint "Mirrador de Narváez". Several animals can be seen like deer, foxes.......

These redwood trees are 25 till 30 meters high and the highest trees of the province. You need four to five people to embrace the trunk. They were brought from California in 1839.
