The village is located on 95 meters above sea level and has 12.431 inhabitants  (2014). Tourism is the main source of its economy, with several hotels and residential areas near the beach and in the mountains. Another important economic activity is agriculture, with an important cultivation of subtropical fruits such as custard apple, avocado, mango, etc.. Recently they started to cultivate  sugarcane again which has been growing in the area in the last 1,000 years, started by the Arabs. The three most typical districts of the village are the Brocal, with its beautiful facades and streets; the Albayzin, next to the castle, from where you have good views of the coast ans the Sierra Nevada, and La Fuente, with its white houses and courtyards filled with flowers. With its authentic tropical climate, it closely resembles that of the Caribbean, with a mean annual temperature of 18ºC, ranging from 14ºC min. to 32ºC max. To the municipality Salobreña belongs also La Caleta and the inland situated small village Lobres.

Points of Interest in Salobreña

  • Church: Iglesia de Lla Virgen del Rosario 816th century);
  • Castle La Alcazaba (8th century). You can visit it every day from 10.30 to 14.00 h and from 16.00 to 20.30 h in winter. From 10.00 has 14.00 h and 16.00 h to 22.00 in summer.
  • Old sugar factory which is situated in the direction of Caleta. It was built in the late nineteenth century and is the only existing sugar factory in Europe. There is also a museum that explains the entire process of transformation of sugar and a model that explains it.
  • Historic Museum:  Address: Old Town Hall Square. Hours: Open from 10.30 to 13.30 and from 16.30 to 19.30.
  • The Rock El Peñon where you have a beautiful on the coast.

Festivities in Salobreña

  • The feria is celebrated from the 24th till the 29th of June in honor of San Juan Bautista;
  • During July and August an extensive programme of sport, culture and music is available for both local residents and summer visitors. Particularly worthy of mention are the "New Age" Concert, the Theatrical performance in the Arab Castle, open air concerts of classical music in the Parque La Fuente, children's entertainments, popular festivals, the special water celebration on the 16th July of the Virgin Carmen's Feast Day, Patron Saints of La Caleta and La Guardia. Also not be missed are the Rock Concert and the Flamenco Festival "Lucero del Alba" in August. 
  • The festivities in honor of  Nuestra Señora del Rosario are celebrated on the 7th of October.
