Arenas del Rey



Small village located close to Embalse de Bermejales. The town has 1280 inhabitants (2014). There are traces of Romain presence. It was for long time ruled by the Arabics and also the home of the troups of Napoleon. In 1884 the whole town was destroyed by an earthquake, but the town was rebuilt in the years after.

The towns Fornés , Jatar and Arenas de Rey are all included in this municipality.

Festivities in Arenas del Rey


  • On the 20th of January are the festivities of Arenas del Rey celebrated in honor of San Sebastian with a magnificent procession and fireworks;
  • On the 2nd of February is the Candelaria celebrated;
  • On the 15th of May the pilgrimage of San Isidro with various performances is celebrated;
  • In the first week of August the Summer festival is held with various activities, concerts and tastings;
  • The people are gathering together in the eveing on San Marcos in order to eat "hornazos" balls of oil with an egg inside. This is going together with green beans.
  • On the 12th of October festivities are held in honor of the Virgen del Pilar with a mass and tasting of local products.

At the entrance of the village Játar you take the right road that that runs along the houses, for a distance of around 2200 m. After two sharp curves you see a wide lane at the right. Follow this, you will see the first facilities underneath and straight south. Go halfway up the other lane to the left, almost imperceptible from the first. This road is leading to a farmhouse that is located at the left from the river. Park you car her. The cave is about 100 meters away.
