The village is situated at 581 meters above sea level and has 15.168 inhabitants (2014). The city was founded by the Catholic Monarchs in 1491, it was a militay camp. It still has the military character like the ancient city gates. Its old town is declared of Cultural Interest. The town is famous, because this was the place where Columbus met the Catholic Monarchs to sign the capitulations of Santa Fe, on April 17th in 1492. Its purpose was to regulate the conditions of the trip to the Indies.

Festivities in Santa Fe
- The Capitulations; on the 17th of April it is celebrated that the document of the Capitulations of Santa Fe was signed by the Catholic Monarchs which would result in the discovery of America on October 12 of that year. On this day are art exhibitions, outdoor concerts and its famous medieval market is changing Santa Fe back to the XV century;
- Corpus Christi; Celebration founded by the Catholic Monarchs to mark the victory of the Catholic faith in the War of Granada;
- Fiestas de Pedro Ruiz; Popular fiesta held around the 31st of July;
- The Fiestas de El Jau; Popular festivals dedicated to the Asunción of Maria at the 15th of August;
- Fiestas de San Agustín; Santa Fe has its festivities around August 28, coinciding with the feast of St. Augustine, patron of the city. For five days, there are several activities;
- Merendica Day (November 25); On the day of Santa Catalina the signing of the Treaty of Granada (November 25, 1491) is celebrated. The people go into the countryside in order to join together a picnic;
