Natural Reserve - The Wetlands Charca de Suárez

The wetland area is called "Charca de Suárez" and is located in the munucipality of Motril, near the beach Poniente, in the area called "Pay Suárez," hence its name. This area covers an area of 14.65 hectares, bounded by the  coastal development and the industrial area of Alborán. Remarkable is the importance of wetlands from ecological point of view in preserving many species of birds, as their vegetation (aneales, rushes, reeds etc ..), are an ideal refuge for many species and are strategic break time points of migration. In Andalusia eight of the nine bird species listed endangered, depend on these resources for their survival.

Charca de Súarez has five observatories, one of scientific use, and eight information panels are explaining to visitors the different areas of the wetland.

The city of Motril maintains the wetland with the possibility of educational and individual visits. The opening hours are Monday to Friday from 18:00 to 20:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 9.00 to 13.00.
