Cueva de Don Fernando - Natural Park Sierra de Castril


The cave is situated in Natural Park Sierra de Castril on the northern slopes of the Sierra del Buitre, in the shelter of the cliffs of Barranco del Buitre and tributary of the river Castril. It is situated at an altitude of 1500 m. The cave is only accesable for experienced cavers. The opening is wide and provides refuge for animals. It the deepest cave of Southern Spain with  a depth of 241 meters and it has various rooms. Until now 2,2 km has been explored.

The first exploration occured in October 1969, the group Alkalsadi OJE Baza reaches the base of the 2nd hole. In December 1980, several components of the SIRE Horta (Barcelona), reached 130 m elevation. Between 1982 and 1986, members of the Sociedad Grupo de Espeleólogos Granadinos fully explore the cavity, and mapped it.
