Canal de los Franceses - Dúdar

The aqueduct was built during the Napoleonic invasion and was used to transport the water from the well of the river Aguas Blancas to Cerro del Oro. Cerro del Oro is an area situated between Cenes de la Vega and Lancha de Genil and the water was used to wash away the gold that was mined. In total three structures of this canal remain today.  The first is what is known locally as The Towers, which are the pillars supporting the pipeline, now disappeared, but the pillars are still there. The second remain is the aqueduct which arches allowing the water to cross the ravine. The last remain is the  House of Cigarrón, which was the gatehouse of the Canal. You can reach this place by parking your car in the village and take the dirt road to the cementery (500 meters). In front of the cementery is the aqueduct. In order to watch the pilars you can take the dirt road that starts just at the beginning of the town, which leads you the whole way uphill.
