Castilléjar



The village is situated at 792 meters above sea level and has 1.487 inhabitants (2014). It is a typical village of the Altiplano with a lot of history. The first settlements are dating back to the prehistoric time. Like other villages in the region the people are still living in cave houses. The people are mainly living from the agriculture, but recently the revenues from tourism are growing and becoming an important source of income for some inhabitants. The village is mainly untouched and it has a modern eco musum which is recommended to visit.

Festivities in Castilléjar


  • San Antón is celebrated on the 19th of January. That day the families and groups of friends will go for a picnic on the countryside.
  • On the 2nd of February the Fiestas de la Candelaria are celebrated;
  • Easter (April / May). On Easter Sunday, the procession of the "Encuentro", symbolizing the resurrection of Christ and his meeting with the Virgin Maria is celebrated;
  • The day of the crosses is celebrated in the "Barrio de Evangelistas" on the 3rd of May;
  • Fiestas de San Isidro Labrador is celebrated in Los Olivoson the 15th of May. A mass and a procession take place;
  • "Dia del Señor" (June). Altars are decorated in the streets through which the procession passes;
  • Festivities in honor of Santo Domingo de Guzmán (early August) . It is the largest fair of the village;
  • Fiestas de Nuestra Sra. De Lourdes in Los Carriones are celebrated on the 16th of August;
  • "Fiestas de la Merced" are held in Los Isidros on the 24th of September;
  • Feast of the Virgen del Rosario, the patron of the town is celebrated on the 7th of October;
  • Midnight Mass and bonfires are held on 24th December.
