Yegen

The village is located at 1040 meters above sea level and has 418 inhabitants. The village was the home of the British writer Gerald Brenan in the 1920s, and he described its customs in South from Granada, one of his best-known books.

A lot of emigrants from mainly Andorra, Germany and Switzerland were settled in the 80ties. This trend has been reversed in recent years, mostly British, Dutch and Germans, bought a a property, reformed it and inhabied them. Yegen is a part of the municipality Alpujarra de la Sierra.

Festivities in Yegen

On the 2nd and the 3rd of January the Niño Bendito is celebrated;
On the 2nd of February the fiesta named "Pucherico" is celebrated. On this day the people prepare a popular dish of the area; a "stew". This is going together with local wines and dancing;
On the 24th of June San Juan is celebrated. On this evening San Juan is blessing everything that is living on earth. This is celebrated with a sardine barbecue.

The church of Yegen (Dulce Nombre del Niño Jesús), 18th century church of Mecina (Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel Arcangel).
Peñón del Fuerte: ruins of an old Moorish castle (11th century).
Old washing sinks; “la fuente Camellona”and “Nacimiento”.
Two old water mills. "El Molino Naciamiento" is located near the old washing sink. The other one is located before you reach "al Sillon del Moro" where you have an view on "Peñon del Fuerte";
Village springs: "fuente tres caños", "fuente plaza iglesia", "fuente panadería vieja", "fuente plaza del barrio bajo", "fuente pila";
Picnic area named Merendero Las Quiebras. Directions: From Yegen descend to the lowest point of the village in the direction of Montenegro, approximately 1 km. from the village you will arrive at the picnic area which is located just behind beautiful willow trees.
