Pórtugos

This village is located at 1303 meters above sea level and has 372 inhabitants (2013). A great part of the municipilaty is inside the Natural Park Sierra Nevada. Just outside the town next to the chapel is a waterfall located. The water is containing a lot of iron which is resulting in a orange color of the waterfalls rocks and the river bed.

Points of Interest in Pórtugos

Fuente de Agria: next to the spring is a beautiful orange waterfall. Everywhere were the water flows the surface has colored orange because of the high concentration of iron;
Ermita de la Virgen de las Angustias. This chapel is situated next to the spring "Fuente de Agria". It has been reformed in the seventies. Chronicles speak already about the chappel in the 18th century;
Picnic area "Merendero de la Junta de los Ríos": Situated in the middle of Natural Park Sierra Nevada, next to a waterfall in the so called "Tajo Cortes". The place is surrounded by pine forest, and you have some amazing views of the entire region. This a space designed for people who enjoy nature. It has stone tables and benches;
Fuentes-Lavadero de Churriana y Noguera including a historic washing sink;

Festivities in Pórtugos

San Sebastian is celebrated on the 20th of January;
Cultural week which start in the first week of August and ends with the Fiesta de la Parva;
The Fiesta de la Parva is celebrated in the first weekend of August. As agricultural season has been finished, the small town celebrates the Feast of the Parva. The music, dance and songs are scattered through the streets and alleys. All attendees are invited to "stamp parva" and have white gazpacho and wine from the mountains of the Contraviesa.
Virgen de la Rosio is celebrated on the 7th of October or the closest weekend. These are the patron festivities and the most important moment is the procession of the Virgen del Rosario through the streets of the town, and the Virgin de Angustias from the chapel to the village church.
