Capileira

The village is located at 1436 meters above sea level and has 436 inhabitants (2013). Capileira is a beautiful town located in the Alpujarras and belongs to the National Park of Sierra Nevada. It is the second highest village in Andalusia, after Trévelez: Being close to the Mulhacen it is an excellent starting point for numerous mountain excursions

Like other towns in the Alpujarra, Capileira has a great tradition and a particular culture that can be seen anywhere. In this village we can find all the typical products of the area and enjoy the lovely white washed houses and steep streets.

Festivities in Capileira

On the 16th of January, in the evening, St. Anton is celebrated with campfires and drinks;
Their popular festivals areheld every year on the last Sunday of April and the second Sunday in August in honor of the Virgen de la Cabeza, patron of the town. On these celebrations several young people are dressed up with masks and costumes made of strips of colored cloths;
On the 5th of August the Virgen de las Nieves is celebrated. They walk from the village the whole way up to Mulhalcen in a procession.

Two public laundries below the springs "Hondera" and "La Pileta" which were in use until 1965.
Viewpoint "Mirador del perchel" just at the entrance of the village where you have a beautiful overview over the whole valley.
