Venta de Huelma comes from the Arabic word "walima"which means feast. It could be that some kind recreation property was in place during this period and from which a larger and more stable population center was established. Some authors argue that it became the geographic center of the district of El Temple.
It certainly was situated on the connection between the large villages Granada and Alhama. Until the sixties in the twentieth century there were people living in caves. The municipality comprises the towns Ventas de Huelma, Ácula, Ochichar and Oasis.
