Santa Cruz de Comercio or Santa Cruz is a town of 554 inhabitants and is located on the right bank of the river Alhama at 739 meters above sea level. Its first settlers were possibly the Romans. Its major development was during the Arabic domination, although it was only a farmstead, thanks to its geographical position and conditions of fertile land with water. In the early nineteenth century the Napoleonic troops were present in the area. In 1884 it was destroyed by the earthquake, but reconstructed with maintaining its essential characteristics. This was all possible thanks to the support received from the Trade Union and the traders from Madrid,In gratitude the village changed its name to the current Santa Cruz del Comercio.
